Dog Food
What’s in your dogs food? and why does it matter?
Food is extremely important, both from a sleep perspective as well as a general well-being.
Having a healthy digestive system is essential for a happy and healthy dogs.
Now for dogs who are stressed, it is likely their digestive system will be upset. Just like when we are nervous, we get butterflies, may need to eliminate more frequently etc - so can be the same for dogs. Additionally, the gut manufactures about 95 percent of the body's supply of serotonin, which influences both mood and GI activity. Therefore, looking alter the dog's gut with a good diet is essential. Furthermore, just like with humans, the food's ingredients can have impact upon behaviour including reactivity and over excitability.
Any food which taxes your dog’s immune system should be avoided. Feed your dog a diet which includes high quality whole meats, multiple sources of protein, and easily identifiable fat sources (i.e., chicken fat as opposed to poultry fat). Avoid, at all costs, the use of corn, wheat and soy in your dog’s food. These foods are difficult for a dog’s short digestive tract to process, and are often low quality fillers.
Also, avoid artificial flavours, colours and preservatives, as well as sugars. Poor quality foods can tamper with a dog’s blood sugar level, create irritability, gastric irritation, and other physical complaints which make learning difficult to impossible. If you are interested in feeding home-cooked meals or raw food to your dog, make sure you do lots of research first.
What’s in your dog’s food? You should be able to decipher what is in your dog’s food from the label on the back easily. What is on the front is not always what is on the back.
In a nutshell – you should be aiming to feed a high quality dog food which contains actual, real meat. The higher the meat content the better!
My dogs are fed a dry dog food which is a minimum of either 50%- 70% meat (which is available in the shop) but they also get a high percentage of fresh meat added into their diet (this is raw based). The dry food is mainly used for enrichment and training.
